Alabama became a territory in 1817. Prior to this, it was part of the Mississippi Territory. In 1819, Alabama became a state. The first Federal census taken in Alabama occurred in 1820 although very little of it remains.
There are many places to search for answers to your Alabama genealogy questions. If you know what is available, you can make much better use of your time and effort in finding out all you can about your Alabama ancestors in the US. Here is where to start some of your searching.

Also, there is a state Alabama Historical Association which can also be found at PO Box 300100, Montgomery, Alabama 36130-0100.
